Title: Adventures on the Dark (and Noisy) Side
Post by: Jeremy Payne on April 04, 2009, 07:06:55 pm
I love shooting at night ... both in the city and the countryside ... and I don't get to do it nearly as much as I would like ...

I enjoyed the front page article and thought it might be fun to start a thread to share night shots ...

Here's a couple recent ones from NYC at night:

And one from the countryside:

Please post your favorite night shots!

About a year ago i started making pictures with a small DSLR at night. This is also when in urban areas. I have been doing it with a "normal" lens, usually at iso 3200. Instead of worrying about the noise i try to use it. Along with the compressed DR, it can provide some interesting results.

I love shooting at night. Especially in the winter. I don't let the 'noise' bother me. It's the special silence and stillness that only comes in winter that I'm after.

I love walking around at night and sometimes bring the camera as well. If I don't have a tripod I'll use a bench, wall or whatever I can find, with a delay so I click the shutter and leave it for a few seconds to settle.

One of my more 'interesting' night-time excursions was when I was working down in Texas in 1996.  We were in Cotulla, staying in a motel near the off-ramp for the interstate.  Every night about ten or so I'd go out in the parking lot and do my t'ai chi exercises in the parking lot.  Well, cars would come off the highway and see this half-naked hairy thing making strange gyrations outside the motel and more than one driver just stopped dead in the middle of the road.  Fortunately for me, nobody tried to shoot me to find out what I was!

Here are a few pics...

Mike.

Here's a few from Amsterdam last year ... the D700 with the 50mm 1.4D is a great night setup.

Even more amazing, it´s right next door to a title about Fear of Noise; with a mini like that, I´d think she has fear neither of noise nor anything else at all! Lovely ass, and I am right to assume it´s a girl? You never can tell in Florida...

For those who enjoy shooting at night, you should check out Andy Frazer's Night Photography Blog (http://gorillasites.blogspot.com/). He talks not only about his night photography, but frequently features others' sites, books, and exhibitions.
