Title: Telextenders vs quality
Post by: larryg on March 19, 2009, 09:47:20 pm
Wondering if there are any examples available of quality comparisons between using the 1.4x and the 2x on the Canon 400 F5.6 or other fixed telephoto lenses?

Just curious how much quality is lost using the 1.4 and the 2x (mostly on tripod)

1.4x is very good 2.0x the IQ loss is more evident.

Just my view.

Here is something I put together for my own comparison earlier this the year after picking up a 1.4XII.  Basically a comparison of image quality of my original 75-300 zoom, and then a 70-200/f2.8L, and 300/f4L, the last two also hooked up to a 1.4xII.  It is a fascinating series showing the same bar-code on the back of a book.  The attachments are Microsoft Word so these here may not work out.  No warranty as to quality, as I said, I did this for my own benefit.

I have a Canon 300/4 IS + a recent 1.4x TC.

Vs. the naked lens the biggest differences are:

1) AF slowed way down due to the light loss (Probably even worse with the 400/5.6)
2) Loss of contrast

Sharpness tends to still be fine, no real problems with vignetting or other corner issues.
