Title: Please advice: I want to test Aptus vs Sinarback.
Post by: evgeny on March 08, 2009, 05:04:03 am
Hi.
My Aptus 65 arrived. I want to test it vs Sinarback 54M in studio.

Here is what I think to do:

1. The Aptus 65 is connected to Contax 645 mounted on tripod.
2. The Sinarback 54M is connected to another Contax 645 mounted on tripod.
3. I shoot a scene with a, suppose 140mm, lens at all apertures with Aptus, then mount that lens to another camera and repeat the same series of images with Sinarback. I change power of strobes same for each back to correctly expose at selected appertures.

I can set a still life scene, is there anything better for the test?
What do you think?

Thank you.

Why not do a series with the Aptus and then switch to the Sinar back? That way you can eliminate any variables that may occur with the change of camera. If you lock down the tripod for each setup, you would get exactly the same framing.

I suggest to verify the shots are taken "linear", I mean not curves applied by the software while shooting.
I did the test it with Afi 7 and E75 and I found the Sinar a better file.
And don't forget to let us know

The Aptus uses a Portrait curve as a default setting. I also noticied there are many other parameters set in the tethered Leaf Software, I'm not sure, yet, if I can disable they all. I will check again what can I do. Thank.

That's it! it's the same problem when I tested the Afi7, the rep. told me that the "portrait" curve is the more neutral but it's always a curve! that's way I found the Sinar a better file maybe

It would be better to adjust the strobes so that the histograms are the same for both backs. That is a more realistic comparison than under- or overexposing one of the backs just to keep the strobe setting the same.

I will try this first. Thank.
