I plan on printing this to approximately 20 inches wide.

Thanks for any feedback.

A tricky one: I can see why you went for formal symmetry, but part of me is just itching to see the edge of the shadow at the right. An interesting study in texture and form nevertheless.

I agree with the last comment.Because my eye was catching that clipped- off corner (bottom right) it became a niggle in an otherwise pleasing composition.

Yes about the shadow, a little wider would work better.  Or maybe not, I no longer trust the faint voice of my inner high school photography teacher.  20" wide is too small.  Print at 40" high by whatever wide, mount it flush on Dibond, put it all by itself on one freshly white-washed gallery wall.  If somebody wants to know "how much" they will have to ask the girl at the desk, the answer is $5000 (minimum).  Don't think for a minute it wouldn't sell.

I love the tones and textures but I agree with the above, the shadow just throws it for me.

You know what Brian, I actually like the way the right hand corner of the shadow is clipped. It is unexpected and seems to buck the rules. Everyone would expect that it 'should' be included, but it made me wonder why it wasn't. I didn't come up with any other reason than "because you could!".... but that in itself made the image stronger for me.

The shadow is fine.  It is the bottom bit of the image that keeps dragging my eyes down.

I would be tempted to crop the bottom just up to the bottom of the shadows. Then the clipped corner might look more intentional.

I'm with Julie on this: the clipped shadow corner does seem like a deliberate bucking of convention.

Nice photo.

I like this image quite bit. As Lois said, a fine study in texture, form and light. If the whole shadow was included, this in turn would increase and disturb the proportions of the other elements. So I think it is appropriately cropped at that point. At first I had a quibble with the horizontal black line at the bottom, but now I see it more and more as part of the study of form and light. Very nice.

On reconsideration, I prefer the original cropping to my suggested one. Very arresting image.

Thanks for all your input - I struggled with the cropping but you see what I finally chose and feel good about it.  Clipping the shadow brings to it a bit of visual tension which I like.

Bill T - I wish there were enough pixels in the original file to print that large.  This was taken on holiday with my Ricoh GX 100 (raw).  I'm pushing it when printing to 20 inches wide.

Cheers,

Brian

Along the bottom edge from about 1/3 in from the left, all the way across to the bottom right corner, there is this vertical streaking. It gets progressively wider moving to the right.

Is this from using the Edge Extension setting in Photoshop perspective correction? Whatever that is, I would like to see it cropped out.

Otherwise, I really like this and don't mind the cropped shadow one bit!

Wow!  you're right about the Edge Extension.  I hadn't noticed it.  Time for the cloning tool although on the print it appears as a 'step down' and looks OK.

Thanks Ian
