Title: Hand grip strap for Canon
Post by: rcdurston on January 17, 2009, 10:34:59 am
Just wondering if anyone has one of these (http://www.eos-magazine.com/EOS%20Collection/Sales/camera%20accessories/wriststrap.html). I was curious as to how thick the baseplate is?

thanks

I have 2 different Canon camera bodies (ancient D60 and a long-in-the-tooth 1DII).  I looked at wriststraps several years ago, and rejected those that attach to the tripod mount because of inconvenience when needing the tripod.  The Canon strap shares the top right attachment ring with the neckstrap, and attaches also to the gizmo on the right side of the baseplate, thereby not interfering with the tripod mount.

While I found the wriststrap really helped steady the cameras, I hated it when shooting verticals because it always managed to come between my eye and the viewfinder.  It became so annoying that the two wriststraps have joined the long line of camera bags and tripods I no longer use.

Ya, these have a tripod socket.

Rob, slightly off topic but may be useful info. I have been using a leather wrist strap on a 40D (the strap itself I think is from the 1960's). It was no trouble to unscrew it from the L plate for tripod use and I loved carrying the camera by my side where it was completely unobtrusive and could quickly be brought to eye level. However this movement from the waist to eye, moving across the front of my body with all that weight, gave me an unpleasant case of tennis elbow which after 6 months I'm still waiting to heal. Apparently this happens quite commonly. I now reluctantly use a good detachable neck strap and use both hands to lift the camera. If I happen to be holding the camera in my right hand I've gotten into the habit of reaching down with my left hand and then using both to lift. David

Back in the film days I used to handhold an RZ all the time. You end up with a "Popeye" of a right arm but man could you move fast.

I have the one from your first post for use on my 5D. It works great and just takes a second to unscrew when needing to use a tripod.  I used the regular Canon wrist straps on my 1D series bodies.  I have not had a problem shooting vertically with it. They have been on all of my Canons for the past 6 years.

I like the security of having the strap and it let's you relax your grip a bit.  I don't put a strap around my neck because I have had neck surgery and the strap can trigger pain.  (Plus it is just not good for you to have a weight hanging from your neck.)

For my 5D I have the original E1 wrist strap attached to an RSS L bracket (no grip).  That way I can use the wrist strap without any issue concerning using the tripod.  I've used it with various bodies attached to grips primarily but like it best on the 5D with the L (the L has a notch to attach the E1).

I have an old Camdaptor with wrist strap on my 10DIR (flat AS plate) and maybe (no name on it)  a Kenko wrist strap that screws into the tripod mount hole on the 400D/XTi--that necessitates unscrewing it and putting on an AS plate if I want to use it with tripod.

Just a whimsical addition, but I am using a Gordy's leather wrist strap (black with red thread)  on my new G1 with a Wimberley AS plate.
