Title: Pick flags don't stick

Since LR 2, I'm noticing an issue where my Pick flags don't stick. When I flag photos as Picks in a folder source, then add them to a collection, the flagged status gets reset to unflagged.

Running LR 2.2 on both OS X and Vista; same results on both platforms.

Are pick flags source-specific? I couldn't find anything with a quick search of Google.

Any insights?

I think that pick flags are collection-specific or am I missing something?

Also - if you make a virtual copy from a file that is flagged, the flag is not inherited by the VC.

Flag status is also not written to XMP metadata.

For these reasons I'm planning to eliminate Picks from my editing workflow! Simple stars are the way to go... they are much more "portable" and "permanent".

I agree, pick flags are a bit "weird" compared to stars and color labels.

I'm glad this was brought up.  I had noticed when you created a virtual copy that the picks didn't stick but hadn't noticed in collections.  I've been using picks for editing, but there's no reason stars and color labels can't be used similarly--so that's what I'll try next.

Use flags only for temporary purposes - like picking and identifying rejects when you've just imported new images. If you want to apply a lasting evaluation of an image, don't use flags - use ratings or labels.

There's a mantra - flags are local, ratings are global. While I'd like there to be an option to make flags global, and would probably set it myself, there is a logic to the way things work now and it meets certain needs. For example, imagine a wedding - you might have the images in one collection with flags for the couple's choice for prints, and a similar collection with different flags for their choice of what goes onto a multimedia DVD. This local behaviour gives that sort of flexibility.
