I understand that I can start a slideshow from the Library or Develop modules by first selecting slides from the filmstrip and then hitting CONTROL + ENTER (PC, running Win XP). Most of the time this works fine, but on occasion things fail in one of the folowing ways:
The slideshow starts and/or ends at unpredictable slides
The settings are inconsistent with those of the Slideshow module
On (rare) occassion my PC has crashed and/or re-booted!
Any advise on how best to use the impromptu slideshow feature? Should mention that the source for my slides ar LR folders, and that I have not intentionally rendered 1:1 previews

Gerry, several days ago I asked for help to figure out why my slide show was reverting to the first slide at random times and johnbeardy gave me the answer: "select them all, and create 1:1 previews with the Library>Previews menu. This is so LR won't have to regenerate the full screen images from the raw data when you're presenting your sldieshow". Apparently there is a bug in LR, this is the workaround and it worked perfectly. The 1:1 preview is in the Library module only and the slide show runs normally.
Sorry I cannot help with your other questions.
