Post by: marcmccalmont on November 29, 2008, 07:20:53 pm
Nothing special, just took a few handheld shots this morning so I could post some raw files for those that are interested

The shadows look clean, looks like the MkII has an additional stop of DR over the original

Lots of moire.  Otherwise looks pretty clean.

based on the raws or the jpeg? the jpeg is pretty awful but gets better if you press + over the image.

I only grabbed the first 3.  Processed one in ACR 5.2.  0036, I think.

Yes #36 has moire and is easily showing extinction resolution in the vents at 200%. This would be quite obvious on a larger print.

Marc,

your 5D2 beats your 5D by at least 1/2 EV in the darkest regions @ ISO 100 (I used one of your earlier posted 5D raw files). This is on a per pixel basis, add the extra pixels!

Do you still have the color checker card? If you make a serie of raw shots with each ISO, up to 3200 (save the higher ones, they are fake), very evenly lit, 3 EV underexposed, then I can measure and compare their noise/DR behaviour. IIRC, you had converted the 5D in IR, right? That does not matter, the noise characteristics is not affected by that.

Yes I would but I am in Tokyo for 4 months of training so I don't have access to my color checker. (lucky though here I picked up the 5DII on the 29th in the US they are taking orders for April!) I will return home the second week of January but by then I'm sure all the reviews will be out. I sold the 5D maxmax (AA removed not IR) to help fund the 5DII so I cannot do a side by side comparison. My first impressions though are the shadows are much less noisy and usable. Also the fine detail like foliage is more realistic. When I return home I'll take the pictures of the color checker and post them. I think the sensor is in the same league as the 1DsIII so for $2800 I'm happy (for another 3 years!)
