Last night I updated ACR to 5.2. When I tried Lightroom's "Check for Updates", it said there aren't any. Given that they use the same engine, I would assume the LR update is imminent. Does anyone know more about how soon it will be released?

I have heard December mentioned somewhere, whether thats right or not I have no idea. Wayne

OK, that´s good news. I have a G1 and use LR, and the new DNG Converter is already a great step forward from 16-bit tiff´s from Silkypix
Even those beefed-up "linear dng´s" are far better.
What I don´t get from the Lightroom Journal entry is whether the updated LR will also use a conversion to dng "on the fly", or if it will actually be able to read the native raw´s directly.
(BTW, I found that if the DNG Converter is allowed to put the conversions in the same folder as the raw´s, and keeps the same file name, the raw´s are imported into LR catalogue as "sidecar files", so it is easy to keep track of them for future use. No need to embed them, then).

Per, that blog post describes exactly how LR 2.2 will handle .RW2 and .RWL files, as well as DNG files from those 5 cameras in question.
