Title: C1 Pro 4.5 - finder intergration and workspace
Post by: tmx3 on November 01, 2008, 08:33:13 pm
This was my inital reaction to C1 4 last week:

"I brought and installed 4 Pro today and my initial reaction is very disappointed. Keyboard shortcuts have been changed - well frankly the whole intreface has - its like a different raw converter all together. What made 3.7x so good was it was an elegant, intuitive and simple interface. 4 seems to try and cram everything into the different "tools" making it very cluttered (now called "tabs" which while being more acurate indicates the level of name changing for different functions, which is very irratating). 3.7 required the user to use preferences, nested functions in drop downs etc ; now all of this seems to be cramped into the tabs. I have to learn how to use this because i'm sure at sooner or later the photographers i work for will be using it, but I really despair at the way companies fiddle around with something great because they feel they have to - at the expense of users - if it aint broke etc..."

This reaction has somewhat moderated but only slightly; I can see the new program does have some useful features and there was a little bit of "it looks different i don't like it" when I first ran the program. However I do feel there are a  number of valid points . The way the program intergrates with the finder is awful compared to 3.7. For example in 3.7 at the click of a button I could create a new folder within a session. Now I have to navigate to the session within the library tab, ctrl click "new folder" then select it as a favorite  - how is this (3 steps instead of one) an improvement?   Is there an easier way of doing this?

Also I am finding the program (although interestingly not the processing) is running a lot slower on my macpro. This is causing the above three steps to become considerably prolonged.  I am seeing the "spinning wheel of doom" everytime i navigate back from another aplication for about 15 seconds - very annoying. drop down menus from a ctrl click pop up way slow (an equal time frame to above, plus wheel of doom).

My next question - is there a way of saving toolbar workspaces? It would be great to be able to switch between different workspaces or to use customized workspaces on different machines via a file.
