Title: Stills while taking video
Post by: larsrc on September 23, 2008, 12:46:22 pm
If my understanding is correct that the 5DII can take a full-resolution still picture *while* video shooting commences, that could be extremely useful in conjunction with the software that was presented at SigGraph earlier this year, which uses still photos to enhance a video sequence wrt detail, dynamic range and even object removal.  See http://grail.cs.washington.edu/projects/vi...Enhancement.htm (http://grail.cs.washington.edu/projects/videoenhancement/videoEnhancement.htm)

It's my understanding, that the video will freeze for <1 sec while the mirror flips down and the picture is captured.

Still; opens up for some creative use.

I guess the mirror flip-down is so that normal AF and exposure metering can be applied, rather than taking them from the AF and metering in video mode.

Obviously, there are software and interface issues to work on still. Wonder how long before somebody makes the zoom lenses automatic?

You have a point, no real use for flipping the mirror down I guess (depending on what focusing mode is selected - but that is probably locked to life view while shooting live video).
I am pretty sure still though, that it freezes (was it here at LL I read that?) while processing the image. Whether or not, they can make this happen seamless through software upgrade, I doubt - not if you want full resolution RAW. I would guess (but I have absolutely nothing to back this up) that the chip is running in one of the "lower resolution RAW modes" while shooting, and it wont be able to "switch up" while continuing live video.

All this is just guess work though - I'll be happy to give more input in 3-4 months or whenever this baby decides to land in a small country like mine

Edit: "A small country like mine" being the same as yours I just see
