Now that LR2 has output sharpening, I wonder what the conventional wisdom is on using LR2 sharpening instead of PKS (assuming one doesn't need Creative Sharpening). Should I be thinking of using LR2 sharpening exclusively?

Are there any LR2 sharpening presets anywhere that correspond to the PKS input sharpeners, such as Hi-Res digital?

Well, I use Lightroom/Camera Raw and Lightroom output sharpening myself...no need for PKS unless you need creative sharpening. There are no "standard" presets for Lightroom except the Landscape and Portrait presets that ship with the app. They are designed for 11-16MP captures. Portrait being for low frequency and landscape for high.

I still prefer using PKS in Photoshop though Lightroom 2 sharpening is a step in the right direction.

I can't quantify this by saying why its better, just that I like the extra control that I have. All my images though are 160 to 400Mb film scan's.

So Jeff, I use a Canon 1Ds3 which of course has 21 MP. Do you suggest an alternative for us?

Not to put words in Jeff's mouth - but... as a user of LR and owner and use of 1DS MK3 myself I have found  that settings of around 60 for amount radius 1 [which is roughly the same as radius .5 in unsharp mask I think] and detail of about 40 is a pretty good start for most landscapes provided you have a good capture.

You can easily of course make a preset for this as I have done and it becomes the default sharpening for 1DS MK3 files.

Experimentation is key with this stuff and its still image dependant - so I always season to taste for my select images.

I still use PKS for my output sharpening in CS3 as LR doesnt yet have soft proofing.

Thats my thoughts and current technique.

I have found that the provided presets need a much larger number in the amount parameter for Nikon files (D200, D300 and I guess also FX cameras). I guess whoever calculated these parameters was not working with Nikon
