I'm sure that you're correct that it is a coyote, but it looks more like a fox, with the black tipped tail and slightly red/ brown color.

Yes, they can look quite comical at times when hunting voles and ground squirrels. They love to jump high in the air and come straight down on the rodent. Apparently this confuses the prey and "freezes" them for an instant since they don't seem to know which way to run. It almost always results in a tasty snack for the Coyote. I've been observing and photographing them for nearly fifty years now and still get a kick out of watching their antics when they hunt.

Yep, after photographing them for fifty years, I'm pretty sure of the species :-)
