Title: Scanning for shadow detail with Imacon
Post by: spotmeter on July 15, 2008, 11:06:03 pm
I have scanned a 6X17 transparency with my Imacon scanner.  While the midtones and hightlights are fine, very little detail was picked up in the shadows. The detail is there in the transparency as I can see it on the lightbox.

I am using Flexcolor software. How do I set up the scan to pick up shadow detail?

My thinking is that I can then combine the scans in photoshop.

Is there better scanner software for the Imacon for shadow detail than Flexcolor?

In the Histogram window make sure the black clipping slider is all the way to the left and not clipping any shadow detail. Also, goto File>Setup and be sure to check the "enhanced shadow detail" checkbox. This checkbox is only for high dynamic range positives and shouldn't be used for negative scanning. Finally, makes sure Flexcolor's color management settings are coordinated with Photoshop's and that your display is properly calibrated. Keep an eye on the numbers. Flexcolor should be excellent for this task.
