Title: The 70-200 & 40d lens mount
Post by: maxgruzen on June 13, 2008, 12:38:03 pm
Buying my first big white one. When I'm working I often need both hands free for things other then photography (Two young grandsons).  Am I going to be able to carry my 40d with a Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS over my shoulder on a neck stap without doing damage to the camera's lens mount? I use mostly primes so my experience with this kind of lens weight is limited.

I'd worry more about your spine.

I own two 70-200 f/2.8 lenses, one each with and without IS. If I were starting all over and had to buy a new 70-200 right now, I would think long and hard about buying the f/4 IS version. Not only is it lighter and cheaper, but it balances better on the 40D body. In my experience, the f/2.8 lens is so much larger and heavier than my 40D, it's just not comfortable. (I've tried it both with and without the battery grip.)

But if you have to have the f/2.8 lens, don't worry about the lens mount. It should be fine. Just make sure you turn the camera around backwards before putting the strap over your shoulder. It'll hang properly this way, without the lens sticking out and banging into things.

Thanks for information that I need not worry.  My spine will just have to make do weather it likes it or not.  I'm pretty aware of the differances between the f4 and the 2.8, but I'm used to primes with their shallow depth of field, and f4 just doesn't cut it for me.
