Title: Shooting tethered--need help!
Post by: dorigatti on May 22, 2008, 09:36:37 am
Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem with my Nikon D1x in tethered mode on an Acer Laptop, running Windows XP Pro SP2.

-Windows recognizes the D1x (when I switch it on, the computer beeps and lists it in Device Manger as Nikon Digital Camera D1 series). So I'm assuming the Nikon D1 driver is OK.

- Nikon Camera Control 2, Nikon Capture 4 and Bibble all recognize the D1x (when I turn on the D1x the Nikon software says, The D1x is connected and in Bibble the camera icon appears on the lower right side. On the D1x top LCD, the PC legend shows, which is as it should be).

- However, when I take a picture nothing happens. No images appear in the preview pane and none are transferred to the capture folder with any of the programs. Also no images are written to the CF card.

- With Nikon Camera Control 2 and/or Nikon Capture 4 the D1x is recognized, it shoots from the software but then it hangs saying, "waiting for new images from camera". In Bibble nothing happens.

- My D1x works perfectly in tethered mode on my Mac G4 DP under OSX 10.4.11 with both Bibble and Nikon Camera Control. However, I want to use the laptop because I can position it optimally in the studio.

This problem has me stumped. I even tried different installations of Windows XP (Service Pack 3 did not recognize the D1x at all. I even installed the drivers manually). Same problem with Vista on my other laptop. However, XP SP2 does recognize the camera and so does the Nikon software and also Bibble but why oh why don't the files get transferred?

I know I could buy a more modern camera, one that will be better supported by USB, but I already have two perfectly good D1x bodies which give excellent results, especially under studio lighting. Plus I'm almost on pension and have to watch my money. Since I'm from the old school of using a pro body for many years, don't like waste, loathe the preset planet-unfriendly use and throw culture, and, ultimately, if it aint broke...

Any help will be much appreciated.

Carlo

Have you contacted Nikontech?  I suspect that unless you find someone here with a very similar setup to yours, Nikon is going to be the better source for making older cameras talk to newer PC operating systems.  There's a chance too, that you'll find a higher proportion of tethered shooters anywhere studio shooters hang out, such as at Zuga (http://www.photocritiq.com/groups/), or even better at Fred Miranda (http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/).

For a short time I had a trial version of Nikon Camera Control installed on my computer and, whether it was a coincidence or not, I couldn't get Bibble to pull in files the way it had before. Once I uninstalled Camera Control, Bibble got back to work.
