Thank you so much for your advice.

As an aside if one converts their files to Adobe DNG there is now a beta Adobe DNG codec. Truly a great thing.

Hi DarkPenguin,
So, would this codec also apply to my Mac OSx. Please advice.
Thank you
Paul

No, the codec is for Vista.
On Mac OS X you should be able to see the previews for your raw files in the Finder anyways.

How difficult would it be to make this for XP too?

So far as I know there was a short lived powertoy from Microsoft that supported RAW files under Xp. I'm 90% certain it has been orphaned in the hopes that this will drive a handful of people to Vista.

It's still available for download (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D48E808E-B10D-4CE4-A141-5866FD4A3286&displaylang=en) from Microsoft:

My (limited) understanding is that the codec APIs are only for Vista. Having a generic DNG reader for XP is straightforward but I don't think XP itself supports it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Eric, I'm pretty certain that it does (if nothing else, I have seen a 3rd party DNG codec). My suspicion is that the Codec's not been a high priority for Adobe, so there's not been testing under XP and the installation package has been limited to Vista.
