Title: Mamiya 645 afd 2 compared to 645AFD
Post by: woof75 on May 01, 2008, 12:29:29 pm
I'm deciding which one to get, my 645AFD just self destructed and I was wondering whether the AFD 2 was worth the extra money. Does anyone have experience with both? How's the AF compare?

I never shot with the I but what I understand the AF is a lot better on the II.

However I would wait for the III which is being released any moment now.

If you would like to test the AFD, AFDII and the AFDII/ Phase One body you can do that next Thursday the 8th at Digital Transitions in NYC. We are showing all the different bodies at a seminar.
Email me if you are interested in testing them for yourself.

I briefly had both, and much preferred the mark II. Definitely better autofocus

Hi
They improved the shutter on the AFDII. I have had a shutter replaced on my AFD. I prefer the AFDII since you can separate the focus from the shutter release. Being in your position buy the AFDIII. What happened with your AFD body? You can still pick up AFD bodies on eBay at good prices. The Big advantage of the AFDIII is that it will have the new firmware for the new lenses that Mamiya has released.
Thanks Denis

My old AFD swallowed its tongue, either that or the shutter broke, I'm pretty sure it was the shutter. I think I'm going to buy a really cheap AFD until the afd3 comes out and has been problem free for a little while then get that and use the afd as a back up.

Hey, whats the new lens firmware business, why would you have firmware for a lens?

The main differences between the AFD and AFD II are the faster AF on the II and the movement of the mirror lock up button and better metering.  The mirror lock up button on the AFD was on the side and the II moved it up to the hand grip where the self timer was on the AFD.

Hi
What I meant to say is that the new AFDIII will be more up to speed with any firm ware updates. I haven't had a problem with my AFDII. You can get a new stronger shutter for the AFD but that costs $900.00 AUD here in Australia. The good news is it only takes a few days as they have spare shutters in stock.
Thanks Denis

Oh cool, I just called the guy at the NY place who said it will only be 400 dollars. So the new shutters are stronger eh? I think the AF was playing up a little too towards the end, maybe they can do something about that.

Hi
Yes the shutter had been improved during the production of the AFD. Even my ZD camera has been excellent. I think they are made by Seiko the company that makes the watches.
