Title: Travel reporting in Video Journals
Post by: Demokrit on March 21, 2008, 07:06:45 pm
With the download of the HD version of VJ17earlier this week, I have now copies of all Video Journals from no. 14 onwards.

I generally like these VJ, otherwise why would I buy them, but I am not completely satisfied about the information available in those segments describing workshops, travel to exotic places, etc.

For instance, VJ17 contains two segments about the Antarctica trip in 2005; the combined time of these segments is about 1h. We are definitely been bombarded with very beautiful pictures, amazing colors, a lot of things the ‘normal’ photography enthusiast or even professional may never see or experience in their life.
But there is a lot of information that I think would be very interesting to know that is not mentioned at all – and the reporting about Antarctica is only an example; I have been missing similar information in segments about Bangladesh, California, …, you name it:

1)   Where exactly did you travel, how long was the trip, how long did it take you to get from point A to B, where were you on a given day?
It would have been very easy to include a map of the region showing where you traveled. Most people have at least a general knowledge where to find the big or not quite so big cities in the World, but I doubt that many know where xx Bay or yy Strait in the Antarctic are located - at least I have no clue.

2)   And there are a lot of other questions I would like to ask:
What photographic or other equipment was taken on the trip, what was actually used, what was found to be good or bad under these special conditions, what was found to be the preferred equipment, what was found to be absolutely necessary, how did the equipment cope with the unusual climatic conditions, how many people were in the group, how did Michael arrange and manage the trip, how were the locations to go to chosen, …,?

It is too late to answer any of these questions for the current VJ17, but perhaps it could be part of a post on the LL-website.

Cheers,

Achim

Good suggestions. However, a portion of what you suggest is available as text information in various articles on the website.

Intersting post...

As a subscriber from issue 1 to issue 17 and ongoing I think the travel segments are BRILLIANT and I thoroughly enjoy them.

They are not really meant to be 'How To' segments [I feel pretty confident in saying] - they are more 'here is a taste of what photography in X destination is like'.

I think Michael does a great job of getting this across in the segments.

You might like to look more at some 'Lonely Planet' docos if you want the 'How To?' sort of segments.

Steve Kossaks DVD's are also more 'How To' than Micheals LL. But.. they are not as interesting in my opinion and although still enjoyable they lack that 'far flung exotic' feeling that I love about LL.

Just my thoughts..

Some of the info you're after regarding the 2005 Antarctica trip is available on the site already.  For example:
Trip announcement (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/workshops/antarctic-soldout.shtml), Post-trip notes (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/locations/antarctica.shtml), Images (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/locations/antarctic-archive.shtml), Antarctic 2005 Members' Photographs (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/workshops/aa-members-05.shtml)
There's also a lot of info about the 2005 and 2007 trips scattered around the web.  For example, if you haven't seen it already there's Jeff Schewe's post-2005-trip article (http://photoshopnews.com/feature-stories/antarctica-expedition/) over at Photoshop News.

To include all that "trip mechanics" info in the VJ segments would result in a slightly different style of segment than we've been getting.  I agree it would be interesting info to get in a video format, but for myself I've been fairly happy with the format so far.  Lots of inspiration, as well as useful material that when put in the context of the copious amounts of information available on the web has rounded out a collection of material for planning trips to similar/identical destinations.

Yes, as the others have already replied, that's available on the main site.

In case you are not familiar with the web site ([a href=\"http://www.luminous-landscape.com/]http://www.luminous-landscape.com/[/url]),  look there on the left column for the "Locations" link: it brings you here (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/locations/).

There is plenty of info there, even about equipment etc; and when that's not readily available from the  above mentioned Locations index page (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/locations/) you will find links to detailed infos inside the listed reports.
Finally, when you don't see an item of interest listed in the index (e.g. like Antarctica 2007... if I am not wrong) you can always find it thru the function  "Search the Site"  (http://www.google.com/custom?sitesearch=luminous-landscape.com&cof=GIMP%3Aff9900%3BT%3Acccccc%3BLW%3A469%3BALC%3A993300%3BL%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fluminous-landscape.com%2Fimages%2FLL-logo.jpg%3BGFNT%3Affcc00%3BLC%3Acc0000%3BLH%3A81%3BBGC%3A000000%3BAH%3Acenter%3BVLC%3Acc9900%3BGL%3A2%3BS%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fluminous-landscape.com%3BGALT%3A006600%3BAWFID%3A35f6ab491fb2b550%3B&domains=luminous-landscape.com&q=antarctica+2007&searchbutton.x=18&searchbutton.y=17)  .

P.S.:  Essays  (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/) is also a useful index for directly finding some other articles related to those trips also reported in the LL-Videos (e.g. Bangladesh, China).
