Title: Eizo or NEC
Post by: kgross on March 17, 2008, 09:31:41 am
I'm looking for some feedback about what display to get, and so I want to ask you all, the "pros", what you think.

I'm considering either the Eizo color edge CG241w or the NEC LCD3090WQXi. I'm sure they are both great displays but I'd like to pick the best one. I live out in the middle of nowhere so I can't go someplace to directly compare them (the NEC hasn't even stated shipping yet). I've used an Eizo color edge at my office and have been quite impressed, but I've never used an NEC so I don't know what to think.

I know the displays are slightly different beasts (24" vs 30", 1920x1200 vs. 2560x1600 etc.), but they are priced about the same. Also, both have internal hardware color calibration features, which ought to be better than calibrating the color on the graphics card, right? Per pixel the NEC is a better deal, so is the Eizo worth it? The 30" Eizo is priced out of my league, so that's not an option.

I'll primarily be using the display for image processing stuff, and the occasional movie. I do HDR panoramic photography (32-bit per channel 12000x6000 pixel images), and so both have merits. The two most important things to me are the accuracy of the color and the size.

Does the Eizo really have significantly better color? The Eizo has 12-bit look-up tables and 16-bit internal processing but the NEC also has 12-bit LUTs ( I don't know about the processing) and they both claim to have a color gamut that covers nearly 100% of adobe rgb). The NEC is much larger (both in size and pixels), which would be nice for viewing/editing those monster-sized panoramas.

What do you Eizo fans think? How about you NEC fans? Any feedback would be appreciated.

k, I suggest moving this to the Digital Image Processing section--that's where most of the monitor talk is.

I'd be surprised to hear of anyone here that has both of them so other than finding online reviews I'm not sure you'll find a lot of first hand information on both, but hopefully so. I have the Eizo, actually I have the 240W and I love it. The 30" NEC didn't exist when I got my EIZO. Had it, I may have gone for it. If they were the same size, I'd give the nod to the EIZO, but they aren't. Everything I have heard about the NEC monitors is uniformly good. With the 24" EIZO, I added a 17" Dell for palettes and such. Since getting the 2nd monitor, I have found it is handy to grab it and connect it to my small laptop to display work for clients in the living room. A 30" could be used but not quite as conveniently.
With two monitors, if one goes bad you have a spare available right then and there. With a single 30" you have a problem if/when it goes south.
I can't comment on the NEC beyond what you probably know. I'm sure you'll like either but if you do a -lot- of imaging work a 24" may not be enough real estate. It's more than enough for many people, but not enough for me. I'd go with a 30" over a 24" if it's just one monitor and you need that extra space, but in my mind it would be a 24" + 2nd monitor  vs a 30".

I don't know much about the nec's but I recently purchased a Eizo CE 210W and I am very satisfied with the image quality. I had a proffessional calibrating the monitor and he was surprised about the color accuracy and the way he could really calibrate the monitor almost prefectly.
He had never seen a LCD screen with such good contrast and such a wide colorspace.

I kept worrying that an Eizo display would be better than an NEC until I bought the 2690WUXI and couldn't be happier.

Those displays accuracy go beyond what human vision can recognize.

I have had my 26" NEC for 11 months.  This NEC is the first monitor, when calibrated ( NEC has its own calibration system with its own puck, so you turn it on, walk away for ten minutes, and it is perfectly calibrated when you return ) that ever matched my prints with what I see on the monitor.  I use the "Eye One" calibrator on my Epson 4000 printer....Quite a combination!!!

I just bought a NEC 2690WUXi with the NEC colorometer and NEC Spectraview2 software and it matches my HP Z3100 ps GP EXACTLY ! Could not be happier!
SAVE YOUR $$$ buy the NEC
