Title: Rocky Flats Wildlife Management Refuge
Post by: wolfnowl on March 15, 2008, 06:07:04 pm
I heard today that outside of Denver, CO was a plant that made the trigger mechanisms for virtually every nuclear weapon ever made in the US.  The result of the manufacturing of these devices was that the entire area was extremely polluted.  Well, after 10 years and approx. $70,000,000,000.00, the area has been reclaimed and the 4000 acres given over to the US Fish and Wildlife Service as the 'Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge'.

Not often one could go birding with a wide angle.

I guess I'd also be concerned about the rangers gaining super powers.

Looks like a pleasant place.  Have you visited it?

Unfortunately, it's been 15 years since I was last in Colorado, but the next time we go to the southwest, Rocky Flats should be on the list.  Looks like an interesting area.

"16 Miles North West of Denver..."

Isn't that almost Boulder? Guess that could explain some things...

I wouldn't plan a trip with this as the centerpiece destination.  From

http://www.fws.gov/rockyflats/visitors.htm (http://www.fws.gov/rockyflats/visitors.htm)

"There is no public access to Rocky Flats at this time!"

By the way... it was 7 Billion not 70 Billion to clean it up and 56 years ahead of schedule!!

They originally estimated it would take almost 70 years to clean it up.
