Title: Sensor cleaning for 1ds Mkiii
Post by: geotzo on March 06, 2008, 04:40:42 am
Having done my first one thousand shots with Canon 1ds Mkiii, I have spotted some bits of dirt that will not go away using in camera cleaning mode. Before I start anything I thought it might be a good idea to ask your opinion on what should I use. I have previously tried green clean suction and wipes and I now think I should try the butterfly brush solution. Has any of you tried anything on this camera? Forgot to mention there is also a hair in the viewfinder that I need to remove. Don't ask me how it got there cause I really don't know, since I have mostly worked the camera in studio environment.

This doesn't answer your question, but I'm curious to know what camera sensor you cleaned with Green Clean and whether it worked well for you.

As for cleaning your 1Ds3 sensor, the usual advice is to start with the simplest and least intrusive thing first - a sensor cleaning brush such as the Arctic Butterfly by Visible Dust, or similar brushes that are specified for sensor cleaning. If that works, you're done. If the dirt is particularly stubborn I'd recommend checking with Canon before using any liquid solutions, because this sensor is new, hence in my mind some uncertainty about whether they may be using new materials which may or may not take well to various liquid cleaners.

I have used Green Clean on previous 1ds Mkii and it works fine as long as the dust is not stuck with moisture on the sensor. Otherwise I had to use liquid Methanol solution on a pad to do a more proper
cleaning. That very last way of cleaning always frightened me...
