Title: 1Ds Mark 3 dust clean= phoney function ?
Post by: Jann Lipka on February 16, 2008, 04:11:22 am
I think Dust clean  would be a nice addition to MArk 3 ,
but from what I see it is simply just a marketing bluff .
and doesn't work at all .

I got some nasty dust spots yesterday and
( after initial disappointment - after all I'm very careful
not to change lens in dusty situations )

I have been trying auto - clean  several times .
it looks for me that it does completely NOTHING .

I can feel camera doing something and I get display sensor clean on the LCD but...

I see exactly  the same spots before / after ..

I can get rid of spots first after  using" old style " air blower ...
( manul clean )

Any other / similar opinions ??
Is anyone seeing difference using this function ?

The 40D is supposed to also have a sensor clean function which works as poorly as what you're seeing on the MK III.  I recently bought a 40D and found the usual dozen or so dust spots on the sensor (every Canon DSLR I've owned came that way from the factory:  D30, D60, 20D, 5D).  I ran the sensor clean mode several times, both by turning the camera on and off and by initiating it via the menu item.  No difference at all, so it was necessary to use a Visible Dust brush, which did work.

Other than presenting the "Sensor Clean" screen upon turning the camera on and off, it's hard to say what really is being done and how effective this "new" feature is.  I suspect those who think it's working just fine don't stop down their lens and/or shoot against the type of background that allows dust to show.

Whatever...  it doesn't work very well.

I think it is simply ridiculous , and it seems that nobody sees tha emperor is naked ...
LOL - sensor clean ...
I guess they spend some million dollars on designing the screen animation . That is it .

It works great on my 400D, but only after I wet-cleaned all the stray lubricant off of the sensor.  The sensor cleaning only works on dry sensors.

I haven't had a need to clean my 400D sensor in about a year, but it was problematic until I did the thorough wet cleaning.

I've had a 400D for over a year with no dust on it.  I haven't had a 40D long enough to see how it works.

My understanding is that if you have trouble with it wet clean the sensor and it should be better.

Same here after about 5000. Change lenses up to ten times per shoot, all outdoors.

Congratulations !

but IMHO = simply too good to be true ...
take a shot of a sky at ISO 100 F at least 16

(  wide angle  lenses are best for this test )

Dust spots get visible .

Once I had to rent a canon M1 Ds Mark 2  =

I have never seen more dusty chip ..

Upon returning to the rental company , they told me that
there were completely no complaints before me ..

LOL  - naturally this is a relative situation , if you shoot sports mostly at F 5.6 ,
you will probably not see anything ...
If you change lenses several times a day - my guess is that you have spots .

I have been using D60, 1 DS mark 1, 1DS Mark 2, 350D, 400D
I have 2 5Ds, one 1 Ds Mark 3 , and one Hassy + Phase P45 ..

All of them get spots with time - sometimes if I'm very savvy with lens changes it can take several months ...

Right now my 400 D " pocket " camera is least dusty ...

I was gonna add to clean the sensor yourself when you get the camera--wet clean it. Then see if you have any problems.

For those of you saying you do lens changes in the field and have yet to clean your camera after extensive use--I really do want the MKIII now, more than ever. What a joy.

Big dustspot on 40D after 2000 pictures which is not removed by the camera, have to clean it myself. so it might work with some dustspots, but obviously not working with all. soo dont sell your sensor brush and cleaning kit.

No it won't clean what is called "welded" material--that stuff that gets wet and then dries.

I hardly ever change a lens ( I just buy another camera for anotherpiece of glas )
, still Mark II is getting more dusty faster then 5D .. ) Today I have noticed a bunny in the corner .
At F 8 already ...
Auto sensor clean is just a joke I think ...

Well i think the dust cleaner on my 1DS3 is a minor miracle, works an absolute treat. Dust, what dust?  My 5D and 1DS2 before were a freakin nightmare.

If you are thinking you won't see dust on your sensor with 1DsIII or 40D, etc. you are sadly mistaken.  Yes I do still clean my sensor manually but far less often than I did before my DsIII.

I figure it all helps... and I clean less often but cleaning occasionally is still required.

The sensor on my 1Ds3 was clean out of the box and has remained clean after about 2000 shots, with a considerable amount of outdoor lens changing - especially during my recent Yellowstone shoot. Dust and dirt definitely enter the front cavity when the lens is off, because periodically I can see it in the viewfinder; this is easy to brush off the mirror and the glass above it. It also suggests that dirt probably finds its way onto the sensor itself, but no such dirt has shown-up yet either on visual inspection or on my images. This means that the self-cleaning mechanism works - at least (and probably only) for dry matter settling on the surface filter of the sensor. I have stopped worrying about loose specs of dust or dirt since I started using this camera.

I just take the lens out and run it and the camera through the dishwasher on the sani-cycle. Gets the sensor clean every time!

As well as 'speaking' 13 languages our dishwasher has autodetect and adjusts the cycle to suit the load - presumably it uses less water for my non weather proofed 5D than a 1Ds3?
