I recently aquired a 17-85IS lens when I bought my 40D (I couldn't find a body only, and it was tax free...), unfortunately I find the lens too slow (5.6 at the long end) and with too much distortion at the wide end.
I like the range that this lens covers but the speed and distortion frustrate me. I really like the 17-40L but it's too short, and i'd prefer an f2.8.
Are there any lenses out there which offer the features i'd like? I have considered a two lens solution, possibly the sigma 12-24 combined with the 24-70L but i'm really not sure.

Sigma 17-70?
Tamron 17-50 f2.8 + 85 f1.8?

I already have the 85 f1.8 so that could be an option, do you know if the tamron is as good as the canon 17-55 is meant to be?

The Tamron is very nice. I love mine. The 17-55 is supposed to be marginally better. Unknown if anyone has seen that outside of a test chart.

Two times I failed to feed him on time. Both times he chased me down the hall and tried to take me down by the back of the leg.
Clearly he's better.
