I've been using LR on WinXP since the 1.0 release. I don't remember how responsive it was when I first started using it, but I know that now it's just really sluggish. For example, in Develop, if I grab the exposure slider and move the mouse, the slider won't even move for second or so, much less update the image.
When I see LR being demonstrated on videos or seminars, the response is infinitely better, absolutely no lag. I'm sure I never saw that kind of response on my system. The common denominator in these system is that they're always Macs, usually just a laptop.
Is this some inherent advantage of Macs? Or is my system/installation flawed?

No, the biggest difference is in single vs multicore machines, whether it is Mac or PC is irrelevant (though there are a couple of minor features that are on the Mac but not on the PC).
Have you tried optimizing your catalogue?

Have you tried optimizing your catalogue?
Yes, but I don't see how the catalog access would affect interface performance in Develop.
