Can you give an example where a lens is offered as XL and non XL?

the one from that link I assume is the non XL because the image circle is 70mm
somewhere you'll read that there is another version with a 90mm image circle.

some of the lens has 88degrees written on it, the others has 105degrees on it....
guess you understand why I'm confused.

Old and New.
The new lens has a bigger image circle then the older version.

how "strict" are the image circle given ? I keep reading that the real image circle is bigger. Anyone with any experience with either 2 of this lenses ? or at least the old one ? how much usable shift is there for a 44mm by 33mm sensor ? yes I can do the math, but what is the "usable" shift ? Guess if I can get about 20mm shift it should be fine.

I have the newer lens and never go past 10mm shift vertical and 5mm horizontal. I can say I have never had any problems.

hi, you don't go pass that range because you don't need to ? or because the quality drops too much ?
if the 90mm image circle only allows you 10 and 5, the 70mm circle is going to be worthless for shifting....

I regularly go to 15 mm either way without issues on my 35 XL Digitar. I haven't tried the non XL so I can't comment there.
