Title: Lightroom runtime boot error
Post by: cerf on October 12, 2007, 04:16:32 am
I'm getting started with a downloaded Lightroom which I then paid for and entered the 6x4 digit registration code. I upgraded to 1.2, again with downloads. The software seemed to work fine. I was doing the LL Tutorial, along with sucking in photos. All was copacetic.

Then, yesterday while moving image files around on external disks to create some semblance of order outside Lightroom à la the tutorial's suggestion to work out directory structures before sealing my fate in Lightroom's concrete boots :-) something happened (I don't know what or why) and I got the following popup:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error.
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusal way.
Please contact the application support team for more information."

I can no longer get into Lightroom nor, for that matter, can I save images with my screen capture program, quite a different program but which apparently uses the same resources.

I've searched the web for explanations of "Runtime errors" but learn the popup usually provides more information, like a Runtime Error code. No such luck.

I would appreciate any thoughts on the problem. Although I've looked through the LR crash stories on this Forum I saw nothing which seemed appropriate.

Many thanks.

This might not be directly on target but it may help.  Check out this technote over at Adobe that talk about this error for other Adobe products...

That's why people say Windows sucks.

Because it does

Thanks for taking the time to look this up Gene.

Of Adobe's three potential solutions at that url (none referring to LR) only Solution 3, running the Installer from a new Local Admin account actually permits me to reinstall LR and use it. Not a great solution but better than nothing while I try to get a better answer from Adobe or the web, or disable and re-enable each startup item or service, one by one to see where the problem is.

Solution 1, disabling the DLA service on the drive where LR resides, I do not understand but perhaps the fact the problem seemed to start after emptying that drive of image files and defragging it may have something to do with it.

Anyway, much appreciated your input. Bill

This is yet another idiotic LR bug or "feature," which I had to go through as well.

Hold CTRL when opening LR, start a new Catalog, open old catalog. More info:

Amazing!!! What a weird "feature". At least now I don't have to go to another Admin account to open LR.

I still have the problem with CapSnapper my screen capture program though so I've got to get to the bottom of the problem.

Indeed. Another favorite "feature" of mine is how complicated and unintuitive it is to change the location of the backup folder.

Version 1.1 resides on the "C" drive of my laptop.
I disconnected the USB cord to my external drives
and went off to a class on Lightroom.  Version
1.2 had been put up overnight, so the instructor
had us download and install Version 1.2 of Lightroom
1st thing.  I was the only person in the class, who
could not get the program to run.  The dreaded
"Runtime Error" message was there to devil me.

After retruning home, and reconnecting the external
hard drives, the program ran.

I have discovered subsequently, that anytime I change
the hard drives in any manner, the "Runtime"
message appears.  By the way, the "Control Key"
fix works.
