Title: Problem with B&W Kasemann circular polarizer
Post by: martin.beek on September 19, 2007, 02:32:09 pm
Hello all,

I recently bought a B&W Kasemann 105mm circular polarizer from BH Photo. It arrived today. However, unless i'm missing something very obvious, the polarizer does not seem to be polarizing! When i hold it up to my eye, or infront of the lens and rotate it, I can see no change at all. I have only been able to try it indoors so far, so will await some blue sky tomorrow. Should this matter? Reflections off windows & other non-metallic surfaces are unaffected, no matter how i turn the filter. Is this normal?

Thanks!
Martin.

Point lens at the open (blue) sky 90 degrees from the sun. I'd bet you'll see and darken sky as you rotate the filter.

circular polarizing filters only work in one direction.  Make sure that you have it oriented the same way as the filter threads show, otherwise it will not work.

In addition the best effect is found on items that area 45 degrees or more from the lens plane.  If the reflections are not on an angle, nothing will happen.

Try it on reflections of the sky on leaves outside and see if there is a change
