I know there not that great but, which is the most reliable in 500 GB type size. My Western digital mybook 500GB drive just died on me, thankfully I have a back up. Very irritating, any consensus on which drive is least bad?

Luck of the draw I'm afraid.
Although the cabinet design ... power supply and cooling system ... can have a significant impact. I'm not sure the mybook was designed for heavy usage.
I have a couple of cabinets from firewiredirect.com, and have used both WD and Seagate drives in them with decent success so far.

I think the best bet is any two drives by different makers. They are less likely to both fail at the same time (dual backups, of course).
