Title: rec: budget f/1.4 lens
Post by: spherop on September 05, 2007, 09:56:30 pm
got any ideas of what the best value, highest quality lens i can purchase for a canon rebel xti camera that reaches f/1.4?

I'd like to stay under $400 if possible.

i'd go with a prime if necessary - however some zoom range would be ideal... but maybe that's not possible in this price range?

anyway ... any thoughts or ideas or experiences would be great to hear.

How about the 50mm USM? It's fast, sharp, and within your budget. I'm not sure what you're using it for, but it makes a good portrait lens on a cropped sensor.

I'm not sure any zooms exist at that aperture. At least nothing designed for normal people.

How about a Nikkor 50mm F1.4 AIS? Dirt cheap, great optics. You'll need an adapter, but then you'll only need one for other Nikkor lenses.

there are no zoom lenses that have bigger apertures than 2.8

I would recommend the sigma 30mm 1.4
I have the 50mm 1.4 and wish I had the 30mm because it is a little wider with the 1.6 crop.
