Firstly I have no connection to either Epson or the Harvey software people. This program was recently mentioned on the Yahoo Epson 4000 list so I thought I'd give it a try. It's a very simple little program that will run a nozzle check for you at certain intervals, perfect for people like me who don't print on a daily basis and aren't disciplined enough to do the nozzle checks themselves
You just need to remember to leave the printer and computer turned on and to load the printer with plain paper so you're not printing nozzle checks on your expensive fine art papers! At $19.99 it's a bargain, looks like PC only at this time

There is a free program called MIS Autoprint which does the same thing:

Is the idea that running periodic nozzle checks will reduce the incidence of clogs? And does it?

Yes, that is the idea. I never set mine up, so continued to have periodic clogs with all of my Epsons, which I used infrequently.
