Title: Print workflow
Post by: Bill Jaynes on July 17, 2007, 10:21:18 pm
Hi all,
Still in transition from wet prints to digital and starting up with a 4800 Pro. I'm seeing three ways to go
1. Adjust color in the driver to achieve desired print.
2. Use a profile for the printer/paper.
3. Use the RIP that came with the printer.
Questions:
A. Are these exclusive methods?
B. Is the RIP something important for making fine art photographs? (No experience with this.)
C. When printing directly with a profile and it does not seem accurate, does one..
     1. Adjust the monitor to match a test image printed with the profile? or
     2. Make a further adjustment at the driver when printing?
Thanks for any pointers.
Bill

Bill,
Michael will release a video print tutorial (sometimes this summer?). This will be something you should be interesting in.

A. #1 is a very bad solution. You'll want to print with profiles (printer/paper). Your RIP application probably came with printer profiles.
B. Opinions will vary. Try to search this forum for RIP (see [a href=\"http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=17490]this[/url] thread).
C. I adjust my image and use Photoshop soft-proofing (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/soft-proofing.shtml) feature to what needs to be adjusted.

A number of books would help you, but try to look into the LL tutorials and forum first. This should be enough to give you some initial help.

Color management is the 800 lb. gorilla of digital printing. In a nutshell, you need to
1) Make sure your monitor is calibrated so you know what you're seeing on screen
2) Have accurate profiles for the papers/inkset you're using. Use application managed color with the correct profile and paper settings chosen in the printer driver. If colors are still not accurate, either you've messed up one of the settings, or your profile isn't very good. Halfway decent profiles should get you at least pretty close, and a simple adjustment layer in Photoshop will take care of the rest. Don't try using the adjustments in the printer driver, because there's no accurate preview and often this will cause the printer to take over color management from the profile and/or Photoshop.
3) RIP's are useful mostly for high productivity printing, placing multiple images on each sheet, or getting access to superaccurate profiles. They are accordingly pricey. You may want to start out learning to use a basic workflow with profiles before learning to use Epson's RIP, which from what I've read is mediocre.
