Hi
Just saw the new 28mm lens today & looked at some shots done with the ZD. Very impressive, the lens is beautifully made, be interesting to see shots taken with other digital backs. The ZD camera has had a firm ware upgrade to the one I own. You can do longer exposures up to a minute and it was clean. The higher iso seems to have improved also. I asked about sending my camera back to Japan for a firm ware upgrade. I wanted to see the the 75-150 zoom but they sold it. With these two new lenses Mamiya has a nice range now.

Denis,
what is your ZD's latest firmware version? How did you get the upgrade?
Thanks,
Michael

Hi Denis,
Any problems with distortion or corner sharpness on the 28 ?

Hi
Just go into L&P and they have it on a ZD camera. To me it looked good & did not need any software.

Hello Denis,
I assume you mean www.lapfoto.com.au?
What was their price for the 28mm lens?
Thanks,
Joe Bossuyt

Not to hijack the thread but thanks for the lapfoto address - just finished reading a very interesting article on the P21 in the desert, very good read.

Denis,
I have had the new 28 mm for about 2 weeks now, but there was a communication problem with the body. The combo is coming back today from the Mamiya service center and I should have it in my hands within 2 hours.
I hope to be able to use it this weekend in the Japanese Alps if the weather allows. I'll keep you posted about the results.
The first few images I shot, all wide open, were very encouraging.
I was not aware of the improved long exposures capability, this would be a great bonus if it turned out to be true.
Regards,
Bernard

I've had the lens now for three days. Mine too has problems communicating with the camera. We cleaned the contacts and got marginally better results. I just shot a architectural job with it and found a work around by turning the camera off and on before every exposure. Obviously, a bit of a problem. The lens is sharper than my 35mm with less barrel distortion. Monday we'll send the lens and the camera in so MAC can see for themselves whats going on. (I've got three bodies and they were all exhibiting the same problem.) I don't understand how they can produce a product after months of testing that doesn't work. I am thrilled that the lens is on the market, just somewhat amazed that it is apparently defective. Jim Haefner

I have gotten the lens back yesterday from Mamiya service center in Tokyo.
They explained me that the communication protocol was changed for the new lenses and that you need to upgrade the firmware of the ZD to be able to solve this.
It seems to work fine now.

Hi
Thats great & can the firm ware be upgraded outside of Japan? I know that L&P sent all the ZD cameras (old stock) back to Japan. Then Mamiya sent them new upgraded stock. Mamiya asked for the old stock back. That is why I want to get my ZD camera updated as I have had it since April 2006. Does that mean the AFD & AFDII firmware will have to be updated to?
Thanks Denis

Hi
This is for the 75-150 zoom so a firmware update is needed. On the Mamiya translated version there is no mention of the 28mm & as we are finding out an update is needed.

Denis, in the american Mamiya webpage, in the 28mm specification is writen that a firmware upgrade is needed. http://www.mamiya.com/cameras.asp?id=1&id2=2284&id3=2285 (http://www.mamiya.com/cameras.asp?id=1&id2=2284&id3=2285)
I would like to know wich firmware is the last one and what changes have been made. My one has the 1.10. Last camera I had was 1.0 but maybe there are new ones.

I'm using both the AFD and the AFDII. We're having problems with both types of camera. The Mamiya site indicates that the lens should be compatable with these cameras. Hopefully, early next week I'll get some information concerning this. Jim

Reading the specs on Mamiya website it would appear that a firmware upgrade is only needed for a ZD.
Jim - what type of problems are you having?

What happens is the display indicates that we have experienced Error #5. When we called Mamiya service, Error #5, was described as being similiar to the "check engine light" on a car. In other words, it could be one of several problems. What happens to the camera is that is won't take a picture consistantly, sometimes it does (after several attempts to fire via cable release), then, sometimes it doesn't work at all. Sometimes it works but doesn't stop down the lens (at least not to the selected F-stop). I was able to get consistant results from the camera by setting the camera (I was shooting on manual), then turning the camera off, then back on and firing the shutter, then changing my shutter speed, turning the camera off and back on and firing again. This way I could get my bracket on a consistant basis. As I mentioned earlier, the lens is sharper than the 35mm lens I use, as well as, exhibiting less barrel distortion. If anyone else has had similiar problems or knows how to correct this I'd sure like to hear about it. Thanks, Jim Haefnerphoto (http://www.haefnerphoto.com)

Here's an update concerning the problem I've been experiencing with the lens. It apparently is a Phase One/Mamiya communication problem that occurs in manual mode (exposure). The tech support at MAC didn't have a P45 to attach to the camera but their support in Japan did and were able to recreate the problem. While everyone's working it out, I'm having the lens returned since I have found a workaround for the problem. Hopefully, the solution will be forthcoming! Attached is a fairly imaged exterior shot with the lens, again I'm quite happy with the quality, very sharp (edges too) with minimum CA. Jim
