Title: Dirty lens hood.
Post by: couleur on July 05, 2007, 05:49:32 am
I own a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 USM L. But after a few months of usage, I notice that the inner lens hood is sucking up a lot of dust. And I find it very difficult to clean it.

Do anyone have any idea how to remove the dust stains?

Toothbrush + water with small amount of soap. Remove the hood from the lens first, and don't scrub too vigorously.

I'm sure you can buy something designed to clean felt that will work.

You say stains, and I'm a bit perplexed... on the inside of my lens hood there's a lot of "lint", which comes out quite well if I remove the hood and use a lint brush.

Because it's felt, I'd look to using a clothing brush (different from a lint brush) and see if the stains go away.  Not sure what would stain it though...

In addition to brushes/soap/water you may want to try fabric wipes like Armor All Wipes (or equivalent). But in any case, don't spend more than a new lens hood.

Maybe use some galpher tape, roll it inside out.  Or maybe use a vacuum wand with the brush on it.  Best of luck.
