Title: How do I get rid of titles?

I'm trying to do as I was taught recently here with keywords. I need to get rid of bunch of titles and descriptions.  I highlite all thumbnails and the delete title field, but it does not seem to be working -- ie-- deleting all titles of all images.  Am I missing something? also what about Core and Lecagy, in Bridge I see core and legacy, only see one thing in LR, and in IPTC don't see titile and description (although do see subject code and description writer) thanks.
