When I downloaded the 4th part of issue #16 There wre 2 files. One was 16_California.mp4 and the second was ._16_California.mp4.
Can I delete the one that won't open or is it there for a reason?

well I will ask the same, but no one of the file is open at all...any help?

Very weird - sounds like corrupted downloads. Please try to download again and post here if you still have problems

I agree that it sounds like corrupted downloads. Mine downloaded just fine in a single file (named 16_Californiamp4.zip).

Inside the .zip there were two files. The one file wouldn't play. The other worked just fine.
Definitely not a corrupted download. (Unless the file on the server was corrupt.)

I will reupload the file and replace the one there. One ocurrence I can understand, but three indicates some kind of anomaly - despite the fact that most people seem to be able to play it. The new file will be in place by 0800 EST May 29

The . file is a remnant, added to the original zip - maybe a temp file or something. Just delete it.

Oh, yeah. The main file worked fine. If the other one was supposed to be something then there is a problem. But otherwise the current download is fine.

Hey, a question I can answer! I know you, Chris, are on a Mac. What has happened is when you created the file and Windows users downloaded it, it split it off into two files. The one without the period and underscore is the file. The one with the period and underscore is, IIRC, the icon file that split off. I used to get this all the time when I'd move files created on my Mac onto a Windows PC using my flash drive. It would look like there were double the number of files. It's just an oddball thing that sometimes happens when moving files from Mac to Windows.

If this were the case, it would have happened on the other downloads as well. The one file(the 16_ file) opened just fine(and was excellent), the other(the ._ file) didn't open at all.

You are assuming he made this zip the same way as the others.

I did in fact use a slightly different method of zipping this last file. Thanks for your help! I will re-do it the same way as the others and re-upload it - sometime tonight

LOL The whole thing has to do with something called the Resource Fork (some magical thing I don't quite understand). Because of that, we don't need a .xxx extension on a file so the Mac knows what to do with it.
It took me foreEVER to learn to add the .doc extension to Word files I'd send to Windows users.

I can confirm that the newer method of zipping is a no-go. I downloaded the California section twice, to my PC, before and after the recent reload, and each time I ended up with 2 files, and each time there were issues with viewing the main file, at different points, first with just the sound, and as the video continues I get a message saying file corrupt. I had no problems with the other 3 sections of Vol 16. Please return to the older method of zipping and let us know when we can re-download (3rd time for me). Whatever you did for the first 3 sections worked glitch-free.

Bad news. Did the California download for the third time, no spurious second ikon like in previous 2 attempts, copied it onto a memory stick and stuck it into a Sony Playstation3. Much fewer glitches but the sound still has some. Pops and crackles and then dead quiet. Fast forward gets the sound back again. When I copied the file onto a DVD, my Playstation3 could not even identify it as an mp4 file. I suspect that the Playstation3 is more sensitive to corruption than a normal PC, but it's a very simple way of getting playback in a TV. Conclusion? Probably works for most people with just one or 2 sound glitches, but note that the 3 earlier sections work faultlessly. I'd suggest that for future releases just go back to the exact same procedure/software you used for the first 3 sections. I had no glitches at all, on PC or on Playstation3, and I do not recall any glitches reported here on those sections.
By the way, I must now admit, reluctantly, that the downloads are the way forward. Just found out that our local post office had a whole bunch of Blu Ray discs addressed to me from Amazon just sitting on a shelf for 8 weeks! Looking forward to one day downloading HD versions of the LLVJ...

The only change - an important one - is the frame rate of the California piece. It has been raised from 18 fps to 24 fps. Perhaps a setting needs to be changed?
