Title: Average size of LL Journal downloads?
Post by: OnyimBob on March 29, 2007, 01:46:56 am
Michael, can you tell us what the file size is likely to be. I have satellite broadband with a download limit of 500 mb/month (exceeded many times this month with the tutorials)  , if I have to increase my limit  the extra cost may not be worth it.
Cheers, Bob.

Each segment varies, but Issue #15, for example, totals about 800MB, and each segment is between 80-125MB.

Anyone with a low bandwidth limit on their broadband will have to get an upgrade, I'm afraid.

Michael,

It is your business and all, but there are places, believe it or not, where downloads of that size are not feasible.

Will the servers be upgraded to handle the additional load? It didn't handle it very well for one of the Lightroom Tutorial segments. As I recall, the server crashed and burned under the load.

Colin,

I understand – believe me.

But, there are business realities that simply make continuing with DVD production, manufacture, wharehousing, fullfillment and mailing both uneconomical and inefficient.

Moving to download means that we will unfortunately lose some loyal customers, but it also means that we will vastly increase our overall customer base and sales, and we believe lead to many more satisfied customers, due to immediate fullfillment and no postal hassles and costs.

We are working on the servers, and they're holding up well. We had one day in particular when we did an email announcement of new content and several thousand people hit the site all at once. Crash.

We no longer do emai, announcements, and instead allow people to discover new content themselves by checking What's New. This spreads the downloads out over time and therefore means lighter server loading.

Overall things seem to be holding up well considering we ran over 6 Terrabytes of downloads in March.

I didn't realize that the journal would be downloadable in segments - that certainly makes a difference.
Thankyou, Bob.

Unfortunately I am in the camp of very slow downloads. I have to smile when I read about broadband customers who might have to upgrade to even faster broadband.

I not only have dial-up, I have a very slow dial-up. But that's my problem. Here's my question. My daughter does have a cable modem connect so I'm sure her D/L speed is much faster than mine. If she signs up with LL and purchases a video D/L (what I really want are the LR videos), can she legally then burn a DVD and mail it to me?

Incidentally, she would be doing this just for me as she is not into photography at all.

Thanks,

Gene

I'm still on a dial-up connection but a reasonably fast one within the 56kb/s limit. Free Download Manager seems to be able to download some files at a faster rate than 56kb/s. I don't know how this is possible but I've timed some downloads (on the basis that 1kBs=8kbs) and it appears to be the case.

I recently downloaded the 139MB beta version of CS3 on an even slower connection and it took 22 hours, so I guess a 125MB segment is doable for me. Might take a whole week of nights though, for the full 800MB   .
