Title: Aperture Vault / backup question
Post by: etrexler on March 24, 2007, 06:03:26 pm
Today I back up my 55GB Aperture library to a vault on a seperate hard drive.  I'm going to get a fireproof safe for the backup drive just in case of an issue or fire.  I plan on putting the safe in the basement on the opposite side of the house from my main library store.  As I see it, I have two options:

1.  Routinely pull the firewire drive from the safe and backup the vault to it, then take it back to the safe.

2.  Put an Apple Airport Express 802.11n in teh safe with the drive and connect them via USB.  This should allow me to always access the vault drive via the network without physical removal.  IT may be a little slower, but I don't think I'll care and the ease of use should allow me to backup more often and more easily.

Does anyone see any issues with option #2?  I know the signal will be degraded somewhat by the safe, but at 50-60ft distance I don't think it'll be an issue.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Eric

LOL.  You don't think a metal, fireproof safe will degrade the signal at the other side of the house?

You will get no signal at all inside the safe.

Not to mention the issues of power and heat.  If that drive (and Airport express) are sitting inside there, and you manage to route power into the safe (er... drilling the hole will decrease the fire safety), there is NO ventilation inside the safe and it will get very hot in there and the drive will die really quickly.

A variant of #1 is your option.  But frankly what I would do as I'm paranoid is to have TWO drives I vaulted to.  One in the safe, one connected so I could vault to it daily.  I would swap the drives every week or two, and the one in the safe would be SAFE, not hooked up with power and some-such ;-)

ok, that was a concern.  Option #3.  I'm going to work out a deal with my neighbor to store each other's backups in our houses and backup via a wireless signal.

Unless your neighbor is very trustworthy, isn't planning to move anytime soon, and doesn't have any kids, pets, or spouse that might inadvertently tamper or damage your backup hard drive, I think CatOne's suggestion makes the most sense, and would be easier to implement.
