It seems that with the third service call I have finally gotten my roll feed unit fixed. It appears that the broken pivot point on the paper release mechanism was the root cause (as best the tech can determine). Updated information (what we believe to be true--no word from Canon either way) on the status of the roll feed unit malfunctions on the front page of the Wiki:
