The Kodak gray side of a Kodak gray card reflects 18% of the incident light, and the white side about 90%. According to a recent post on Scientific American (http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleid=36515D92-E7F2-99DF-395FEA10BEBBB2FA) the key to a brighter white has been discovered from electron microscope studies of a beetle.
