Title: The Flow Country
Post by: Dave (Isle of Skye) on December 03, 2022, 10:01:18 am
From a recent trip around the Northern most reaches of Scotland, to rediscover what a truly amazing place it is. We have been up and around there several times before of course, living relatively near to it as we do, but now I can't wait to go back and shoot it some more.  :)

Lovely evocative image.
A question: were there trees there once upon a time?

Hi Richard. I don't think so, because the Flow Country is a very large expanse of deep, ancient bogland - here is what Wikipedia has to say about it "The Flow Country is a large, rolling expanse of peatland and wetland area of Caithness and Sutherland in the North of Scotland. It is the largest expanse of blanket bog in Europe, and covers about 4,000 km2 (1,500 sq mi). It is an area of deep peat, dotted with bog pools and a very important habitat for wildlife."

So I suppose that possibly a few million years ago, it could indeed have been a forested expanse, but at least since the last ice age, it is known to have been covered by nothing but a deep peat filled bogland, that was impossible to cross on foot without disappearing beneath it like quicksand. This house was only able to be built here in the 1800's, after a track was finally created across the bog, using piles of heather bundles beneath a layer of rocks, to then float on top of the bog. But even then, this route was still regarded as being a very dangerous place to try and cross.

Bravo, Dave.

Thank you and this was also a very tough shot to take, because it was during a massive storm and gale force winds (more images to come on that topic very soon).

Thank you Dave for cluing me in about the historical vegetation.
It's interesting the similarity between The Flow Country and the wetlands of Louisiana where a road is made to float on a soft, unstable, underlying layer.

Thanks guys  ;)

Yes the atmosphere and weather when were there, seemed to me to be exactly what was needed to show off this moody scene at its best (in my humble opinion of course). And I think I have been lucky enough to capture the shot, with a feeling of loneliness and isolation and even the passage of time (again in my humble opinion).

So yes, tuning myself/yourself into the mood of a place and then trying to capture that mood within the shot, is what it is all about (and once again, that is in my humble opinion) :)

Beautiful.

The scene reminds me of an area near Höfn in Southeast Iceland.
