Title: LR much faster version 11.5 to 10.4
Post by: kers on September 23, 2022, 12:03:48 pm
I am still working with OSX Mojave due to some 32bit-apps and printer utilities that do not work in Monterey.
Because of that i am still working with LR 10.4 - That version does everything with the CPU and uses that to the full 100%. It seems to use the GPU memory also.
However i have installed Monterey on a different drive and today I did a speedtest .
The 11.5 version uses the CPU less strong - instead it uses the GPU processor for a large part and the GPU memory to the max.
LR10.4 does about 18 images NEF to tif 16bit a minute on Mojave and LR11.5 does the same images at a speed of 46 a minute. a factor 2.5 faster.
The output tifs  I have checked look exactly the same.
I was surprised about the enormous speed bump.

I would disagree with this assertion - at least for panoramic merges. LR does large panoramas at glacial speed, even when you've got a GPU or two, e.g. the attached screeshot of Windows 10 performance while a large panorama is being merged. CPU running flat out, GPUs idling away.

LR can only use one GPU.

LR can only use one GPU.

It wasn't using any GPU.

It wasn't using any GPU.
It wasn't when it can't.
When it can, it only uses one.

Voila, LR 11.5 obviously does not use the GPU for panorama stitches ( ptGui does) but it does use it to convert Nef to Tif... and much faster than in version 10.4...

Many programs aren't well optimized for the hardware/OS combination... LR shows that in some part it could be 2.5 x faster, and probably even more.
So you can buy fast hardware, but speed is the sum of all. PtGUi and Fast Raw Viewer seem to me very well optimized. Photoshop certainly not.
