Hey all,
Normally, the photography I do involves 4x5, 5x7 or 8x10 film, working in the field with natural light only. But I'm shooting some more digital
these days, mostly since I can carry that system in the car a little easier day in/out.
I have a portrait project I'm looking to start within the next year or so, and this will be shot inside my shop, so flash would be needed. I'm planning
to use at miminum, 4x5 or 5x7. But some shots might be on 8x10. So more power than I currently have, would be needed.
Now here's my thoughts: There seems to be an abundance of older Profoto Pro-7 equipment being put on the market, both locally and online.
Granted, I realize many of these packs and heads are likely from rental fleets and are being phased out as newer models come in. When I was assisting
here in LA, Pro-7 packs were an everyday occurrence, so I'm used to them. Now the prices these pieces of equipment are listed for, equal 3-4 days of rental at local rates, for renting newer equipment. But I would not get to keep the equipment of course ;).
The equipment would be used regularly for photographing other items as well, not just this project. So long term, I'm looking at what system I would like to
start investing into, you could say. Building a system for mostly in-studio use, in-house for my own needs.
Is Pro-7 era stuff, still easily fixed, if needed? I've used some older(like early/mid 90s) Broncolor Pulso packs in the past, and they were iffy,
as the capacitors got dried out, or any other myriad of issues occurred. New Bron stuff is simply more than I can afford at this time, despite being my
preference if they were the same price/availability. So I'd rather not put money into a system that could have issues and not be able to get repaired.

I would ask someone that services them like Silvino's Pro Flash Rx.

I agree with TechTalk, I bought a used Acute b600 for a steal last summer and had Silvino's service it. I find it to be quite reliable but it isn't as robust as a Pro7 and only powers one head.
