What a cutie! Nice shot, Mark.
-
are you sure it is a broad winged?...
-
bobfriedman, I am never sure of anything. What do you think it is? I came across what I think is a mating pair in SE Ohio busy nailing rabbits..

shots in flight might help confirm. some hawks are notoriously difficult to ID with all the colour and pattern morphs.

I would have to see the tail feathers.. but this may be an immature red-tail, hence no red tail feathers. Broad winged hawks have a stripe on the tail and that dark ring around the underside.

bobfriedman, I think you are correct. It is a juvenile red-winged hawk. I attached a portrait of the same bird with bits head swiveled.

thought so... also... I should have just posted links to those Cornell images.. sorry

bobfriedman, if you just look at the varieties of red tailed hawks (some of which do not have obvious red tails) it's pretty easy to get lost in trying to identify them or any other bird.

the only red-tails that do not have red tails are immature red tail hawks... it is an adult characteristic. that said, broad wings have close but different features.

Thanks bob.
