Title: Apple nano-texture option on displays
Post by: kholt on March 14, 2022, 02:46:51 am
I’m looking to buy the new 27” Apple Studio display.  I have a question whether I should opt for the nano-texture matte finish or the standard glossy with anti-reflective coating.

My use case is editing and proofing images for printing.  I don’t have particularly difficult lighting in my office.

I’ve heard some argue that with the high brightness of 600 nits for this display you don’t need the  nano-texture because the brightness overpowers the reflections.  That doesn’t help me though.  I set my screen brightness rather low to combat the proverbial “why are my prints so dark” issue.  I’m thinking that low brightness settings is a good argument for the nano-texture.

On the other hand the standard glossy is said to have sharper text and overall more attractive appearance.  I guess if I was showing images on my monitor the glossy would have a more vivid “wow” factor.  However, that’s not me.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?  I don’t care about the incremental cost, just looking for the best option that will keep me happy with my purchase in the long term.

Simple: non glossy.

ArtIsRight just did a youtube video on exactly this topic from the perspective of photographers that print.  It is literally the only review of this monitor I have seen anywhere (including at DPReview if you can believe that) that addresses this issue from such a perspective.

Although he doesn’t recommend the monitor over other options like BenQ for this use case, he does suggest the nano-texture is the way to go.
