Title: Which High End Monitor: Dell or NEC
Post by: Robert DeCandido PhD on January 18, 2022, 04:17:34 pm
For my wife who does 95% photo editing in RGB 1998; and some video work; posts to web and occasional printing.

Great would be self-calibrating, and ability to compare an RGB 1998 processed image to an sRGB image side by side on the screen

Two choices in our price range:

(a) Dell UltraSharp 32 HDR PremierColor Monitor - UP3221Q (https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-ultrasharp-32-hdr-premiercolor-monitor-up3221q/apd/210-ayci/monitors-monitor-accessories)

(b) NEC MultiSync PA311D https://www.itpro.com/hardware/monitors/355746/nec-multisync-pa311d-review-a-step-behind

any advice? I have the NEC 302 and it is fine...

Thank You!

NEC (based on years of using them) but because you already have an NEC and if matching the two is important, that's going to be a lot more doable.

Between the two, the NEC, hands down. Would never get a Dell for photo editing.

I had a Dell for 12 years and now it went unstable; just got me a Eizo of the same period and panel.
The panel seems the same as the Dell's but the light is more even spread and the software to make the panel work is better. (hardware correction)
The difference is not so big in this case, but maybe i got lucky with that specific Dell. Wit Eizo and NEC it is garanteed you are OK.
Anyway this Eizo still works perfectly after long use and calibrates very precise.

I have PA311D and its perfect in every respect - factory calibration is reference grade, Panasonic 4K panel is the best there is, with excellent OCF that gives very nice blacks and it has perfect uniformity. It’s identical to EIZO CG319x, but much more affordable. Grab one fast, it’s EOL already ;)

Thank You Czornyj and everyone! Yes I am leaning toward the Dell; now have to convince wife why she wants (needs) one...

You may be limited to what is available.  It's hard to find an NEC in stock.

An NEC PA311D and an Eizo CG319X (https://www.eizoglobal.com/library/management/coloredge-academy/) are not identical. There are many differences in the hardware, software, design, and manufacture. I would expect this is obvious to anyone comparing them, but perhaps not everyone.

For the original poster, you can find an excellent in-depth review of the NEC PA311D at PRAD.de which is a German language website. Below is a link to a Google Translate version in English...

The same site has a review of the Eizo CG319X for anyone that is interested...

You're comparing two very different monitors! The Dell is a DisplayHDR 1000 (https://displayhdr.org/performance-criteria-cts1-1/) monitor whose strengths would be viewing and editing HDR video content. The focus of this monitor on HDR video creation shows in the gamut coverage specs of 99.8% for DCI-P3 compared to 93% for Adobe RGB and in its DisplayHDR specifications.

The NEC PA311D is an SDR monitor with approximately 100% Adobe RGB coverage and 96% for DCI-P3. Based on a usage profile of "95% photo editing in RGB 1998; and some video work; posts to web and occasional printing", I'm having difficulty seeing the benefit of an HDR monitor.

A photographer who won't do video and/ or HDR editing, the Ezio and or the NEC is a wiser choice and it skips the local dimming. used NEC for 15 years my two latest are great and consistent color can be achieved.

The ceiling seems to be 5000 for critical color but I find no need a 3000 monitor or less is sufficient.

Remember to make lots of prints!

I have an 11 year old NEC PA271w that still calibrates with delta E about 0.6 and has no dead pixels.  But I have begun looking at new monitors because I suspect it will take a bit of time to assess the market.  If NEC were still making the the updated equivalent monitor (PA271Q), I'd be happy to purchase it, but all of the stores that used to list it say it's discontinued.  I read the thread about the Eizo v. NEC 31" monitors, but really don't want to purchase that large a display unless I have to do so.  Which brings me to this question:

Would you knowingly purchase a $3600 monitor knowing it was end-of-life?  My PA271W has been a real workhorse and never had a problem, but I would be a little concerned about dealing with repair issues if NEC/Sharp got out of the high end monitor business. The other issue is how much longer will they support SpectraView II?

I don't have answers to these questions: just wondering.

There are four currently shipping Eizo 27-inch ColorEdge (https://www.eizo.com/products/coloredge/) models shown on the Eizo U.S. website. Prices from Chromix (https://www.chromix.com/ColorGear/shop/manufacturerdetail.cxsa?contribid=11656), including instant rebates (add to cart to see price with rebate/discount), are:

• ColorEdge CS2731 - $1,209
• ColorEdge CS2740 (4K) - $1, 764
• ColorEdge CG2730 - $2,200
• ColorEdge CG279X - $2,363

In addition to the models above, two new 27-inch ColorEdge models (https://www.eizoglobal.com/press/releases/2022/NR21-017.html) were announced January 27th. These are the 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution CG2700X (https://www.eizoglobal.com/products/coloredge/cg2700x/index.html) and the 2560 x 1440 resolution CG2700S (https://www.eizoglobal.com/products/coloredge/cg2700s/index.html). The Eizo Global ColorEdge website (https://www.eizoglobal.com/products/coloredge/index.html) shows the two new 27-inch models in place of the CG279X and CG2730. I have not seen any prices on the two new 27-inch models and they do not appear to have started shipping them yet.

PRAD.de does have test reports on all of the currently available models. Google versions translated to English are below...

I was able to find an Eizo CS2740 - 4k and will be receiving it next week.  I would have purchased an NEC but could not find one.  Monitors are in short supply everywhere and I was lucky to find the Eizo.

For any Eizo owners that might be interested, EIZO APAC has some independently produced support materials and videos. EIZO APAC is an independent company and not a subsidiary of Eizo Corporation. I’m not the original poster but I did just hook up my new CS2740 to my new Mac Studio…

Prior to this I had been using a 2017 27” iMac 5k that had a very tired 11 year old NEC PA271W as a second display. I replaced the PA271W in anticipation of my coming Mac Studio, which of course needed it’s own monitor. As you know the iMac retina screen is really very nice, can be calibrated close enough but cannot be controlled as precisely as the NEC, Eizo, etc… I had briefly considered a Mac Studio display, but decided to try an Eizo for the first time. Always could make it my second monitor and still get a Mac Studio display if I had regrets. Well, I didn’t.

This non-professional’s opinion is that the CS 2740 looked at least as good as the iMac retina screen, and I would say better. I had it connected  as a second monitor to my iMac for about 6 weeks, so extensive side by side comparison. Where the Eizo clearly eclipsed the iMac screen was in the ability to calibrate screen precisely and maintain various presets depending on task. And that has carried over onto the Mac Studio. I like this Eizo so much, I plan on adding a second Eizo.

I have to admit that I probably did not need the 4k capability. I have read (read: looked on the internet  :) ) that a 5k monitor, running at 5 k,  is not really the best way to evaluate an image, that a lower resolution (i.e 2560x1440-WQHD) is probably the highest you wish to use for destination print.

I was a little confused at first, and maybe even still a little bit, that when “native resolution” is selected in the Mac OS preference panel display it “chooses” the equivalent of a 1920x1080 display. I can “scale” it to higher resolution which results in menu bar and palettes shrinking to very tiny. Sweet spot seems to be “scaled” to 2560x1440. Makes me think I should have just considered a monitor with that resolution, ie. the upcoming  CG 2700S. Maybe that will become new second monitor?

Thanks for sharing your experience. Native resolution and pixel density does seem to be a personal preference. I'd like to test the CG2700S when it's released.

How did you find ColorNavigator to use? Fairly straightforward for basic calibration?

As a friendly suggestion... you may wish to consider keeping that discussion where it began. It's a worthwhile topic, but it may not be productive to insert it into other discussions and create potentially tumultuous distractions with no prior discussion to provide a reader with context or continuity.

Just a thought for consideration.

The topic on M1 Mac's and subscrptions to Photoshop was worthwhile too. It did get deralied when the admited thief showed up. The one we're supposed to believe has an honest opinion about Eizo displays here.
But yes, your request is sound and after consideration, I'll refrain from further comment about LuLa's resident crook.  ;)

Sorry for the delay in replying.  Absolutely the best monitor I have ever owned.  Very accurate color which mimics my GTI Executive viewing station.  Color Navigator software is very easy to use and switching between profiles is fast with the controls on the monitor.  I use it with both a PC and an M1 Mac.  I will never buy another NEC.

It's the professional's monitor. Durable, color accurate, easy to calibrate. One never sees an NEC in a professional retouching studio. It's the most important tool in your studio. Just don't waste it on silly screen saving periods, always put it to sleep. My CG 277 is now eight years old. and fine.

You never do.
Three (and there are far more) examples for your readers to consider as to the validity of what 'one' never sees.  :D

Thanks for the feedback. I've been a long time user of both NEC and Eizo monitors and I have no doubt that you'll enjoy your Eizo CS2740.

What I've noticed with the Eizo monitors is their extraordinary consistency in remaining neutral regardless of color mode selected. What I like most about ColorNavigator is the depth of its features and capabilities, the regular updates, and the fact that it's a free download is certainly nice as well.
