Title: Built-in lens profiles?
Post by: Redcrown on October 17, 2021, 01:28:25 am
I was fishing through some old raw files when I noticed something strange. Some of my raw files from a Canon 5D3 and Canon 5D4 show a "Built-in lens profile applied" in ACR (13.4 on Windows). This for both the Canon 24-105 and 70-200 lenses.

To the best of my knowledge these camera/lens combos have never had a built-in lens profiles. And strangely, the message appears on many, but not all images. It also appears it is a false message. If I tick the "Use profile corrections" option on and off, the image preview changes according to what I believe is the external lens profiles. I also have raw images from Canon EOSR with the same lenses, and I can't find any showing a built-in lens profile.

It will only appear on raws (not JPEGs from the camera) for one. On the one camera I have that shows Built-In lens profiles, that's it; I have no further options.
You might consider uploading a raw for us to look at with various versions/OSs of ACR and Lightroom Classic .

Here are 2 raw files, same camera+lens, shot 4 seconds apart. One with a built-in profile, one without, only difference is focal length.

Does it happens with the original .cr2 files or only with the DNGs?

I find instances on CR2, CR3, DNG, and Lossy DNG files. But I'm convinced it's a bug of some sort and a false positive. I'm not a Lightroom fan, but I tested it and found the same. If ACR reports a built-in profile, so does LR.

It seems like a bug at least in terms of what is shown here. The results kind of appear the same (on or off). I'm not sure why such a message is shown with one but not the other while the actual profile is the same in both.
I can officially bug it (since I'm testing on a beta too and it still behaves the same), but if Adobe asks for the images, I'd need to know if that's OK with you.

digitaldog, please hold off on using the raw images I posted. I'll look for a different non-person image and get back to you. I don't remember who that girl is and have no way to get permission.

Sounds good.
