From a distance, it looks like snow but hailstones are no joke without a shelter.

Once my wife and I had pulled into the parking lot at a trailhead in the Canadian Rockies, just about to start on a hike, when a sudden hailstorm started. The racket on the car's roof was deafening (we were glad it wasn't a convertible.) After about five minutes it stopped completely and we did our hike. We were so glad we hadn't started a few minutes earlier that morning.

Great set! I love photos of nature's fury.

I was photographer for a mountain running race earlier this summer and needed to camp up at high altitude to be in position when the runners came through in the morning. A couple of times during the night I had pounding hail that started to make me wonder if my tent would hold and what I'd do if it didn't. Thankfully it held and I didn't have to find out! Kind of nerve wracking for a while there.

Well, our car roof was quite a bit sturdier than a tent, so all I can say is

"Hail to you, Matt! I'm glad your tent was tough."   ;)

I was riding a bicycle across Kansas when a viscous hail storm came upon me and my partner...only thing we could do was pull out our rain suits and huddle up...it was either our knuckles taking a beating or our heads...no fun at all.

The worst part I "endured" in the car, although there were moments when I thought the car will take some damage.

I did have some shorter lived episodes on my way up, luckily I still had some trees to provide a little cover.
I didn't have my knuckles hit but my toes, I had to crunch to avoid too many direct hits. Still a good decision to take the sandals, I didn't have cold and wet feet the entire trip, as the sun came out briefly later by the time I passed 13000 feet.

The trail was mostly ok, not as slippery as I would have expected
