Title: Custom Profiles vs Stock
Post by: sruddy on June 30, 2021, 05:04:33 pm
I just ran into a color matching issue that I'm pretty sure has to do with a paper profile from the paper manufacturer. When I printed on a different paper the color issue was gone. So while suport is trying to help me resolve the issue I figured I would try making my own profile with the dated discontinued Color Munki Photo. I lost my cable but a new one is on the way so I can't just make the profile today and answer my own question. I used to make all my own paper profiles until I noticed the new papers and stock profiles I was starting to use looked more accurate. What are your experiences and if you think making your own profiles can be more accurate what current product should I purchase. I only need the printer profile function as I use X-Rite i1Display to calibrate my eizo monitor using their color navigator software.

How did your tests turn out? I wouldn't be so hard on your ColorMunki. X-Rite's current value model, the i1Studio is a mildly warmed over ColorMunki Photo and the newest iStudio software will work with your Photo.  IMHO the next step up is trying ArgyllCMS freeware (tutorial here- https://torger.se/anders/photography/argyll-print.html).

My personal experience was that my own profiles were preferable to the manufacturer's, regardless of the profiling software I used. Not by a huge margin, but I could notice it.

I ended up using the iStudio software with my Color Munki spectrometer. I was satisfied with the results.

A few years ago I had some color issues printing on Epson Luster using canned profiles and LR and Mac OS. I bought a custom profile from someone well recommended and there was no difference. The problem went away with an upgrade of LR, and I later read that the version of LR I was using had a known bug that created color distortions. So, the problem is always complex...
