Title: The forum software is dated
Post by: Peter McLennan on January 19, 2021, 10:13:24 pm
I subscribe to several fora.  Many of them now allow direct importing of images into the forum posts via drag and drop into the post directly from the file manager.

AFAICS, this isn't possible on this software, it apparently requires hosting somewhere else, and a link to that host site - a multi-step process that inhibits effortless sharing of images.

For a forum about photography, this is a serious lack and, frankly, a major PITA.  We'd see a lot more imagery if it were as easy as on this forum software:

I don't disagree that the forum software is old and outdated, but that assertion is not correct. External hosting of images is one way of displaying them here, certainly; the other way, which I've used several hundred times over the years, is to upload the image to this site. Your choice.

Uploading images to the sight directly is so easy I have never bothered trying external hosting.
I agree with Jeremy on this.

Thanks for correcting me.  I didn't know that direct uploading to the site was possible.

How is this done? Drag and drop doesn't work.

Click on "Attachments and other options" right under the text box you type your post in

There also a sticky at the top of this forum (9th down) "Attachment : Specs and Tips"

Click on "Attachments and other options", then on the "Choose File" button. If you click "(more attachments)" you get another such button. You can attach up to four.

See screenshot.

I'll be darned.  I should read the instructions. :)
I chose a file, it shows under "attach" but doesn't appear in "preview".

*edit: You don't get to see it until you commit to "post".

Thanks for the tutorial, Jeremy.

I think the customary abbreviation is "RTFM"! But I'm not sure there's an M to R.

No, it doesn't appear in preview. I don't know why. Anyway, you've found it.

The previously mentioned forum software allows drag and drop placement and dynamic resize.   Most convenient.

I'm pretty sure it's the same software that was in use when I first joined, nearly 17 years ago.

I think you are right.

Of course the good side of that is that I'm so used to its quirks that its easier for us ancients to use than to have to learn a new system.   :(

In the last 100 years that you've been on this forum, that has been explained like 100 times. You've been living under a rock? Even a caveman knows this by now.

I agree with Jeremy on this.

I agree also. I have a Lightroom export preset for LuLa that puts the photo on my desktop, where the forum software looks for it. So getting a photo into a post is a 3-4 click process.

I copped to not reading ALL the information on the page.  I admitted my ineptitude. What else would you like?  My head on a platter?  My first born son? FFS.

I stand by my original post. Other sites offer realtime previewing of images before posting.  It's still archaic forum software.

hines Forum (SMF) software is an open-source, Internet forum, message-board application developed by Simple Machines, LLC. The name reflects the creator's initial goal of providing a website that could be operated by novice programmers and requires minimal server resources.[1] Simple Machines won the forum-software.org best free forum software award in 2009.[2]

Id bet it has been pretty much the same since 2001

I like  to think of the software as Traditional.

And you can still use it without a film-changing bag!   ;)

Slobodan is like a bot that throws out negative comments to every possible post. Just ignore him, everyone else does.

But without Slobodan here, nobody would think.   ;)

Is there a reason you have waited six months to post that obnoxious comment about someone who has contributed far more to this forum than you?
